You Don’t Need Media Interviews for Media Attention

Not long ago, someone told me they weren’t interested in being interviewed by the media so they didn’t see the point of attending any media-related worskhops. As hard as it is for me to believe, it is TRUE—not everyone is trying to get on radio, TV or in the newspaper to do an interview. As a matter of fact, some people are intimidated by doing media interviews because they feel like they may not have anything valuable to say or they are mic and camera shy.

For those of you who may be in this category, please allow me to set the record straight. Seeking media attention isn’t just about being interviewed. Although you should consider it a privilege that someone wants to learn more about you and your business and broadcast it to others, your sole purpose in life shouldn’t be about how many times you can get in front of a microphone or camera.

HOWEVER—-if you are serious about wanting to promote and grow your business, some form of PR and media must be in your future. By this I mean, you should be motivated to get the word out about what you do. Just a simple press release announcement or PSA posted on a media website IS exposure. Understanding the mechanics of how to get your message out there without being interviewed is a strategy. Learning how to do that is beneficial to you and your business whether you’re being interviewed or not.

Word of mouth still rules for credibility but try thinking of the media as one GREAT BIG MOUTH!
