Yes I did it! This baby boomer decided to jump into the deep waters of social media by joining TikTok. Of course, I was reluctant, however, my 14-year-old grandson convinced me I would be a good addition because of the service I provide.
So let me give you a little back story…..I joined Mother’s Day weekend. I created a very short video introduction using two photos (:13) and then proceeded to post a video stating my purpose for being on the platform. I planned to disseminate information to help people improve their communication skills Then I posted a rather unflattering Mothers’ Day message.
On Monday (5/10/21) I posted my first vocabulary word: COGNIZANT. In 24 hours, I had received 9214 likes, 35.2k views of the video and 3515 followers. The following day, that same word had 26.6k likes, 79.6 views and I now had 7764 followers. As of this writing, Cognizant has been viewed more than 168k times, shared 645 times while I received 45.8k likes and 489 comments. My MOST WATCHED video has now become how we pronounce the word Literally. It has garnered more than 180k views.
As far as followers go, I reached 50k on May 22.
I am certainly no expert when it comes to teaching anyone about how to be successful on TikTok but I do know this: If you have something of real value to offer, you will receive likes and followers. What I have personally discovered is, people are thirsty for knowledge but they don’t want to spend long periods of time to receive the information. That probably explains why TikTok lets you post videos that are :60 or less in duration. That probably also explains why I gained so many followers in a relatively short period of time.
It is believed the average person spends 52 minutes a day on TikTok. Of all users, 62 percent are between the ages of 10-29, while less than 5 percent are in my age group. You are bound to see videos that will educate, entertain, inspire and even SHOCK you. My video shocker was informing my followers that 54 percent of all U.S. adults between the ages of 16-74 were reading at the 6th grade level or lower!
TikTok is a great place to showcase your talent and/or promote your brand or just to simply let the world know you exist. I’m very glad I took the plunge.
