Getting Back in the Publicity Saddle After a Break

Last week, I took a few days off and went on a boomer road trip with my husband.  Even though we both took our laptops, we vowed to spend LIMITED time on them and, surprisingly, we accomplished that goal.  Now we’re home again and it’s back to business as usual.  But is it really?

Going away on a vacation is something every solopreneur should have the benefit of because, as Executive Coach Jeff Cannon explains, “Vacations are good for you, professionally and personally. The stress, frustration and weariness that come with any job — even one you enjoy — inevitably build over time. Taking a vacation is like hitting a reset button, allowing you to become more creative and productive.”

If you’re a solopreneur like me, you know the success or failure of your business rests squarely on your shoulders and marketing yourself out there is a 24/7 job.  Not being seen, in-person or virtually, for an extended period of time may make potential clients/customers think you’re no longer in business or you’re just too busy.  Either way it could lead to some missed opportunities.

Here are some tips on how to market yourself and keep your name alive and well while you’re away on vacation:

1)  Hire a Virtual Assistant or someone who can maintain your social media presence while you’re away.  Of course, it should be someone you TRUST since you will have to turn over passwords in order for them to access your accounts.

2)  If you can’t afford to hire someone, set up automatic tweets on Twitter by using https://www.socialoomph.com/ You can create tweets for the duration of your trip.  The only downside of that is if someone responds to something you post and you don’t respond they might think you’re ignoring them and disconnect from you.  Of course, if you set up Tweetdeck you can capture the message and respond when you return to the Twitter scene.

3)  Ask a couple of past or current clients/customers to sing your praises while you’re away.  If you’re an author with a book, get someone who recently read it to offer a review with a link to Amazon or if you have a future event, get a former attendee to post something and share how much they enjoy your workshops.

4)  Create a newsletter and send it to your subscribers right before you leave.  Offer some valuable tidbits and run a special on your website if you have products to sell.  At least you can be making money while you’re away.

5)  You could always just post a message on your most active social media sites letting people know you’re off the grid for a few days.  (You don’t have to say you’re on vacation to give potential burglars any ideas).

The important thing to remember is a balance between work and life is healthy and it’s important that work doesn’t always take precedence.  But when you decide to take a vacation, no matter how long or short, you can still be on the publicity radar.
