Controversy Sells

In my new book How to Get on the News Without Committing Murder, I have a chapter titled, Controversy Sells. Basically, it talks about how the more controversial you are, the more people will stand up and take notice even if they don’t agree with you.

The other day I reacted to the link of an article posted by @huffpost50 on Twitter.  It showed a picture of  group of white men and women representing baby boomers.  Immediately I wanted to know where were the black baby boomers so I re-tweeted the article back to @huffpost50 and began to question why there was no black representation in the photo or the article. After several tweets, someone responded by inviting me to become a blogger for the Huffington Post.

Was my mission accomplished?  Yes and no.  Someone from the Huffington Post did, in fact, take notice of my message—but why did I have to point it out to them?  Why didn’t they see it for themselves?

I write this to tell you that when you believe in something, keep standing up for that belief even if it is controversial.  Although I don’t necessarily believe my raising the “no blacks in the photo” was controversial, I do believe I raised concerns that someone at the Huffington Post had not considered.  The fact that they responded indicates that when you take a stand for what you believe in someone will notice.
